Clipless pedals, also known as System Pedals, such as the CONTEC Pierce, are primarily used in competitive cycling. Especially among gravel bike and road bike riders, the “clip-in pedal” is a popular way to maximize energy transfer while pedaling. But clip-in pedals can also be quite appealing to mountain bikers and enduro enthusiasts. The Pierce features a clip-in system on both sides that, when used with the appropriate Pedal Cleats, secures the rider’s foot to the pedal. What might sound like a dangerous prospect to beginners at first is actually easy to learn. To unclip, you simply need to move your heel outward—a maneuver that’s a bit tricky at first before dismounting, but quickly becomes second nature. The CONTEC Pierce is equipped with the SPD SL system on both sides. This system features a CrMo cleat with adjustable release tension. The compact, one-piece aluminum body of the Pierce pedal has a CNC-milled CrMo axle with a high-quality, sealed industrial bearing. Each pair of Pierce pedals weighs just 380 grams.
